SRDS AI Policy

SRDS embraces AI as a tool for learning โ€” when used responsibly. As a faculty member, you set the tone. Here's what the policy says and what it means for your classroom.

๐Ÿ’ก

The Core Principle

AI use at SRDS is grounded in our motto: "Teaching students how to think, not what to think." AI should enhance critical thinking โ€” never replace it. You decide when and how AI is appropriate in your classroom.

โš–๏ธ

Faculty Authority

Teachers retain full authority over AI use in their courses. You may permit, restrict, or require disclosure on a per-assignment basis. Make your expectations clear in your syllabus and assignment descriptions.

Ethical Considerations & Accountability
Students must not use AI to promote violence, discrimination, hate, or to disseminate false information. Using AI to plagiarize โ€” including rephrasing others' work โ€” is prohibited and treated the same as academic dishonesty.

Privacy & Security
Students must not enter personal, identifying, or sensitive information into AI platforms. Data used to prompt AI must be ethically sourced. Most AI systems retain and train on user input โ€” students should treat AI prompts as semi-public.

Appropriate Uses
AI may be used for data analysis, information retrieval, brainstorming, and drafting โ€” when the teacher explicitly permits it. Students should always ask: does using AI here deepen my understanding, or just shortcut it?

Verification & Accuracy
AI is not always accurate. Students are responsible for verifying AI-generated content with reliable sources. Submitting incorrect AI-generated information can carry the same consequences as plagiarism.

Disclosure
When AI is used, students must disclose it clearly โ€” not just in citations, but in the body of their work. If asked, students must be able to identify which sections involved AI. Failing to disclose results in a failing grade for that assignment.

Policy Evolution
This policy will evolve as AI platforms do. Faculty and students will be notified of changes through official school channels. The tech team welcomes your input as AI continues to develop.
For faculty: Want to thoughtfully incorporate AI into your teaching โ€” or design assignments that work alongside or around it? Connect with Jeremy Orr or Laura Hollis. We love talking about this stuff.

Don't see a tool you want? Submit a request to the tech team โ€” we evaluate new tools throughout the year and are always open to suggestions that serve students.
Getting Help

When something goes wrong โ€” or you just want to level up โ€” here's how to reach us.

๐Ÿšฆ The Three-Step Rule

  1. Ask a student. Seriously! Your students have seen most issues before and are often the fastest fix. Don't hesitate โ€” they love to help.
  2. Find us in person if it's urgent and can't wait. Myron, Connor, Jeremy, and Laura are on campus. For a crisis mid-class, track one of us down.
  3. Submit a tech ticket for anything non-urgent. Email support@saddleriverday.org or visit saddleriverday.freshdesk.com. This auto-creates a tracked request so nothing falls through the cracks.
๐ŸŽ Monthly Raffle! Every month we randomly draw three winners from the pool of submitted tech tickets for a gift card. Submitting a ticket isn't just smart โ€” it might be lucky.
